Temporary Marker Placement Ceremony to Honor John Edward Bruce at Oakland Cemetery

RISEUP and the brothers of James H. Farrell Masonic Lodge #34 are proud to announce a special ceremony to place a temporary marker at the unmarked gravesite of John Edward Bruce, also known as “Grit.” This significant event will take place on August 11th, 2024, at 1:00 PM at Oakland Cemetery in Yonkers, NY.

John Edward Bruce was a distinguished journalist, historian, writer, orator, civil rights activist, and Pan-African Nationalist. Born into slavery in 1856, Bruce made monumental contributions to Black American history, Prince Hall Masonry, and society as a whole. Despite his impressive legacy, his gravesite has remained unmarked for a century. This temporary marker ceremony is a step towards honoring his memory with a permanent headstone.

The ceremony will feature esteemed guest speakers, including:

  • Robert Baskerville, PhD, CEO of RISEUP
  • Mary Hoar, Yonkers Historical Society
  • Ken Davis, Yonkers Historical Society, Past Master James H. Farrell #34
  • William Seraile, Educator, Author

Invitations have been extended to notable figures and organizations, including the Prince Hall Grand Lodge, Yonkers Historical Society, Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins, NY State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Mayor Mike Spano, and local historians, educators, community-based organizations, and churches.

“We are honored to recognize the remarkable contributions of John Edward Bruce,” said Harold Mckoy II, VP of Strategic Planning & Relations at RISEUP. “This temporary marker ceremony is a testament to his enduring legacy and a step towards ensuring he receives the recognition he deserves.”

The temporary marker will be in place for up to six months, allowing time to raise the necessary funds for a permanent headstone. The fundraising goal is $6,000, with consultations from Minozzi and Sons.

The public and press are invited to attend this meaningful event to pay tribute to a true pioneer and advocate for equality. Join us in celebrating the life and legacy of John Edward Bruce and supporting the efforts to provide him with a fitting memorial.
