Tell Your Kids NOT to Try The Chromebook Challenge on TikTok

Important Safety Message from Westchester County Department of Emergency Services

A dangerous trend on TikTok is encouraging students to damage Chromebooks in ways that can cause lithium-ion battery fires. This is not a harmless prank — it’s a serious act that could lead to explosions, toxic smoke, and devastating injuries.

Intentionally damaging these devices isn’t just unsafe — it’s illegal and may lead to criminal charges. We’ve been in contact with school officials and local fire departments and are urging everyone to take this threat seriously.

Parents: please talk to your kids.

Students: don’t risk your safety or someone else’s life.

Let’s work together to put an end to this before someone gets hurt!

After going viral on TikTok, the company said it is blocking searches for Chromebook Challenges.

County Executive Ken Jenkins said, “We want to let everyone know and discourage those kinds of things. Whether you’re trying to stick things in the port for the charging that would short-circuit the particular item and then could cause not just a fire, not just noxious fumes and smoke; it is dangerous— people can get hurt.”
