Robinson Launches Underdog Bid for Mayor
Jefferson Terrance Tenants Association President, and community leader announced her candidacy for the now open 3rd City Council seat in Yonkers.
“I am so excited to announce that I am running for City Council District 3,” said Diaz. “I was born in Yonkers, I have lived here all my life. Not only that, I raised my kids here, and I believe firmly in our duty as a community to take an active part in our government.”
Tasha Diaz is well known for her position as the Jefferson Terrace Tenants’ Association President but also because of the community outreach programs she has started over the years. She has worked with vendors to provide food to the homeless and hungry in Yonkers and the surrounding cities. Most recently, she partnered with FedEx to provide over 300 toys to underserved kids.
“I have made it my mission to provide services to help my Yonkers neighbors,” said Diaz. “I have created partnerships and used my relationships to address problems central not only to the people in my district but across Yonkers and in surrounding cities.”
As an appointed member of the women’s advisory board for the 17th Legislative District and an active member of ACDY, Diaz has the background to join the City Council ready to get to work on day one. Her ability to get things done without a government office only further prepares her to affect real progress for District 3.
“I am excited to launch my campaign and continue to get out there and further immerse myself in the needs of the community,” said Diaz. “See you out there on the campaign trail!”
Diaz joins former Councilman Dennis Robertson and democratic District Leader and community leader Olasubomi Macauley as democratic candidates in the third district. All three will compete in a democratic primary in June if they collect enough valid signatures.
Another Yonkers resident is collecting signatures to run for mayor. Democrat Prince Robinson, 27, said he wants to be in the democratic primary for mayor in June. While 1,000 valid democratic signatures are required, Robinson knows he needs 2,000 to be safe and is trying to collect thousands more.
“I understand I’m the underdog in this race, but we are working hard and mobilizing my volunteers to get on the ballot,” said Robinson, who is a young comedian and is registering voters as he collect signatures. “Many people I meet as I campaign and collect signatures are young people who have never voted before and are skeptical about politics and how they can make a difference. That’s why I’m running for mayor, for those who believe their voices aren’t heard.”
Robinson’s campaign issues are to serve as mayor without taking a day off, and building more affordable housing until the homeless rate in the city is 0 percent.
Robinson said his main goal in running for mayor is to increase the number of Yonkers residents that vote in the democratic primary and in November. “Even if you don’t want to vote for me or sign my petition, I ask the people of Yonkers to get involved, read your local paper Yonkers Rising, and inform yourself about all of the candidates,” he said.
Robinson, who plans on holding several events and meet-and-greets up until petitions are due, welcomes any volunteers or those interested in his campaign to contact him on Instagram @ princeformayor, on twitter @prforyonkers, or on Facebook at facebook.com/princerobinson2019.
Other announced candidates for mayor are incumbent Mayor Mike Spano, and Karen Beltran, both seeking the democratic line. Republicans have nominated Mario De Giorgio for mayor.
