The City of Yonkers remembered one of its own this week as Yonkers Firefighter Neill Tyndal Jr. had a street renamed in his honor, at the corner of New Avenue and Scott Avenue. Tyndal died in 2017 after battling a 9/11-related illness. He was 48 years old.

Tyndal was born in the Bronx on Feb. 5, 1969. He was the son of Neill Sr. and Mary Jane, husband of Rosemarie (nee McNeill), father of Matthew and Neill, brother of Anthony and John (and his wife, Catalina) and uncle of Angela, Jacqueline, Anthony Jr., John Michael, Jayden and Sophia. The Tyndal family came out to remember and honor Neill, who, in his free time, enjoyed boating with his children, as well as riding his motorcycle.

Mayor Mike Spano, City Councilman John Rubbo, Council Majority Leader Michael Sabatino, Council Minority Leader Mike Breen, and members of the Yonkers Fire Department joined to unveil the new street sign, which reads, “Firefighter Neill S. Tyndal Jr. Way.” Councilman Rubbo, who represents the district in which Tyndal lived, sponsored the renaming that was approved by the council in December. At the recent event he recognized Tyndal’s wife, sons, parents and brothers who were on hand. “Neill was a brother of Yonkers, a son of Yonkers, and we’re here as your brothers and friends today,” said Rubbo.

The date of the unveiling would have been Neill’s 50th birthday “He represents the best of Yonkers,” said Spano. “He is Yonkers’ bravest. He has courage, determination, selflessness, and although his loss remains devastating to his family, his memory and his legacy endures in the hearts and minds of each and every one of his who has known him.”

The Yonkers Fire Pipes and Drums played and Tyndal’s sons Neill and Matthew pulled back the covering for the street sign named in their father’s honor, which will make sure that of Yonkers never forgets Neill Tyndal.
