The torch may have been passed, from the mighty Mt. Vernon Boys HS basketball team, to the Stepinac HS Boys basketball team, for the honor of being called the best HS basketball team in Westchester. Last week, Stepinac won the Catholic HS basketball championship with a 69-66 win over Cardinal Hayes. The star of the game was Boogie Fland, who had 30 points for Stepinac. Fland has another year at Stepinac, and is already being recruited by more than a dozen top colleges.

The other Westchester basketball star still playing in March Madness is Aubrey Griffin, from UCONN. Griffin played for Ossining HS, which won a state title under her leadership. Now Girffin is a key player on the UCONN women’s basketball team. They appear to be headed to another Final Four. Griffin will likely end up in the WNBA.

Her brother is AJ Griffin who played at Duke and is now in the NBA. AJ went to Stepinac.
