St. John’s Hospital: A Yonkers Gem

By Eric Wolf Schoen

It all started out with trying to get the cat into the carrier to take him to the vet. Though the carrier is big, it’s no easy task. So this gentle, chubby friendly cat decided to bite its owner.

At first it wasn’t so bad but as the weekend progressed the bite under the wrist got worse. It spread up the arm and the arm got swollen, red, let’s just say it looked ugly. A doctor friend said ‘get yourself to the hospital’ and so began a 7 day journey to our wonderful St. John’s Hospital in Yonkers.

No hospital is perfect. And no one wants to be in the hospital. It all starts in the emergency room. That sets the tone for the hospital. What Emergency Room would set the patient up in a bed with a television set so she could watch her favorite game show, JEOPARDY on the television as she was being triaged. Maybe the patient got there at the right time but there was no wait to be seen.

The Emergency Room at St. John’s is highly recommended when Urgent Care won’t be enough. The specially trained doctors and nurses work very hard to make the patient and their family comfortable. None of those hours to wait to be seen those in New York City hospitals have to put up with.

One thing about St. John’s Hospital is that the place is spotless. The cleaning staff is Constantly dusting and mopping the floor. And if they should miss a spot, bring it to their attention and the area will be spotless momentarily.

The Radiation Department is so gentle that even an infected arm is handled with care. The results are presented promptly and in easy to understand language for the patient.

The doctor assigned to handle the case was extremely professional as were the orthopedic and infectious disease doctors. Nursing care is always extra special at St. John’s. Whether it be an RN or an Aide they go out of their way to address the patients needs promptly, even in the rare occasion that they are short handed.

I Have to compliment Dietary. When something is left off the tray by mistake or the wrong item is on the tray (I.e. regular pancake syrup vs. sugar free) Dietary within minutes brings up the proper item.
The excellent care patients receive at St. John’s is nothing new. During a visit in 2014-15 the care was excellent and my moms many visits during late 1980s and early 1990s were met with tender loving care.

Even years ago when Lyme disease first came out and it was a mystery when no symptoms were visible, the staff went out of their way to do everything in their power to address the problem and make this writer comfortable.

Residents in Yonkers and WESTCHESTER are fortunate to have such a good hospital as St. John’s Riverside Andrus Pavilion and the Cochran Nursing School. And the hospital is bringing on new doctors and new services for the community every day.

I noticed that every other patient I observed was receiving the same fine care even as demanding as some people who are Ill can be.

That cat is ok, after 7 days in the hospital the patient is ok, and it’s heartwarming to know when you need medical services St. John’s in Yonkers is there!

Briefs:

-Migrants, woman and children are being housed at the Ramada Inn on Tuckahoe road in Yonkers. They were bussed up from New York City where they came from on long treks from our borders.
We have a responsibility to take care of our brothers and sisters, but I believe Mayor Spano in that he did not know they were coming and they came with no resources from the state, New York City or the Federal Government.

How can this be. Is Mayor Adams so heartless to send bus loads to Yonkers without any resources. Does the State feel no obligation to those entering the Yonkers borders? How about the Federal Government. Don’t they have some responsibility here? Sadly, everyone throws their hands up in the air and does nothing.

Hey wait a minute. Where are all the New York liberals who vote candidates of their persuasion into office. Why can’t they be generous and kind and invite the migrants into their homes. Many of George Soros’ buddies live in big mansions with plenty of rooms. Why not house the migrants in these palatial palaces?

My guess is we haven’t seen the last of migrants coming into Yonkers hotels and motels. These hotels are not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. For a hotel like Ramada on Tuckahoe to be guaranteed the income for these rooms is a big deal for a lengthy period of time. And I would guess that the migrants were not simply ‘placed’ at the Ramada but that Ramada Management at the hotel has a deal with the city or state to occupy the rooms for X NUMBER of days at X price. I sincerely doubt New York City picked the Ramada at random.

Housing the migrants in New York City public school gyms is not the answer. These gyms are not equipped with proper toileting facilities.

What happened to the big ships and portable housing set up during Covid? And the Javits Center?

-Hip Hip Hooray ‘Congressman’ George Santos’ has finally been indicted!

-When is WESTCHESTER and New York State going to to do something about the perennial problem of too high Trucks attempting to go under too low bridges on our area roadways? Again we had a run in causing traffic delays and damage on the Hutchinson River Parkway this week.

-New York is 98 out of 150 best places to live in the United States. Blame it on the high level of taxation.

-And finally our former President is guilty of sexual abuse. And his attorney has just been accused of drunken sexual rampages by a graphic artist who worked for him. When will these pigs ever stop!
