Back by popular demand, the second annual Dumont Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Fashion Show took place late last month to rave reviews from staff and residents alike.

“A day like today is so special for all of us,” said Pam Banach, Dumont’s building ambassador and director of recreation. “We are a family here at Dumont and the fashion show is a big celebration and a lot of fun.”

In the weeks leading up to the Feb. 23 show, Dumont staff worked with residents in selecting not just their outfits, but also songs to which they’d walk down the red carpet.

‘The King’

One resident, who happens to be a big Elvis fan, looked the part as he strutted his stuff down the red carpet as the DJ played “Burning Love.”

The day put big smiles on the faces of everyone in attendance.

“I love the red carpet,” said one resident. “My mom should see me now!”

Others remarked that the event made them feel so young and beautiful, and that’s just what the day was all about.

“Though many of our residents are in wheelchairs, they walked down the red carpet and had fun,” said Teresa Galbo, an assistant to the recreation director. “It is a big deal for them. A huge self-esteem boost.”

The fashion show is one of several special events and activities the residents take part in throughout the year. From outdoor barbecues when the weather is nice, to indoor and outdoor carnivals, coffee and tea socials, a talent show and, of course, daily Bingo games, Dumont residents have fun all year round.

The activities are one small part of the overall caring atmosphere created by dedicated staff and volunteers, all of whom work to provide patients with the highest level of care.

“Our job is to make them feel loved, because they are,” said Toni Dawn Grimaldi, a recreation leader on the first floor. “It can be difficult being in a wheelchair and away from your family, so something like the fashion show makes them feel happy. It is a great way to start off 2018 and for us to show them that we love them, which is most important.”
