Remembering the Victims of Yonkers Largest Loss of Life in a Fire-60 Years Ago

By Eric Wolf Schoen

We have good news to report on the health of feature columnist Eric Schoen

Eric is sitting up and talking !!!!!

He would like you to put this in his column THIS WEEK:

DEAR READERS

I LOVE YOU
I MISS YOU

PRAY FOR ME AS I WILL PRAY FOR YOU YOU

YOU WILL HEAR FROM ME REAL SOON

HAPPY CHANUKAH. MERRY CHRISTMAS

Every December, Eric would write, “Every year when I think about JCC and Christmas and Easter visits to St. Joseph’s Hospital I think of the tragic fire at the JCC that took the lives of so many beautiful people, young and old early in December 1965. 52 years ago. Family friends perished in the fire and so many lives were shattered. I remember seeing my father crying when he heard the tragic news of those who died, and the many who were scarred by the flames. I know of a leader in our community whose father was called upon to identify the deceased, bodies badly burned. The largest loss of life in a fire in the History of the City of Yonkers.

We can’t bring them back, but we can take time every year during the holiday season to think of them and what they could have contributed to make our world a better place. Some were talented musicians or in the process of becoming ones. A Beethoven. A Schubert or a Chopin. Please remember them in your prayers.

Our family was close with Dr. Shirley Werthaimer who tragically lost her daughter in the JCC fire and had gone to college with my mom.
