US News & World Reports ranks counties every year
In a report released last month, US News & World Reports has named Putnam County the 8th Safest County in America. Communities across the country are ranked by a series of metrics across “three key areas: crime, injuries, and public safety capacity.” This report comes on the heels of Putnam County consistently being ranked one of the healthiest counties in New York State and the country.
“Putnam County is a place where anybody, regardless of their background, has an opportunity to be healthy and successful,” said Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne. “This recognition is a testament to the hard work of all who have made public safety a priority and reflection of the remarkable people who call Putnam County home. We have incredible individuals working in emergency services, law enforcement, rehabilitation, prevention, education, treatment and we have successfully worked to foster a safe environment for all to thrive.”
“We are pleased to be ranked as the 8th safest County in the United States. However, our goal is to be Number 1! This achievement is the result of the hard work of our deputies, investigators, and corrections officers,” said Putnam County Sheriff Kevin McConville. “Every member of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office is well trained and aware of their role in keeping our residents and communities safe. I congratulate them for their efforts and this recognition.”
