Milder Belalcazar and John Vorperian, pictured above with former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, have different political views but share the same concern for supporting human rights.
Recently, the married White Plains couple went to Capitol Hill and met with legislators to advocate for the release of Armenian hostages being held in Baku since 2023 due to the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
They met with Westchester’s representatives George Latimer and Mike Lawler to thank them for being sponsors of key legislation. The duo also personally met Senator Ed Markey and Representative Jim McGovern of Massachusetts.
A surprise meeting happened in the halls of Congress when the White Plains denizens saw former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
“She kindly gave us a few minutes and we thanked her for her years of backing Armenian issues,” said Milder Belalcazar.
The couple plans to do lobbying next April during Armenian Advocacy Day.
In advance of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to Armenia, the Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly) welcomes the continued strengthening of U.S.-Armenia relations and sustained high-level engagement between the two countries. At the same time, the Assembly remains deeply concerned by Baku’s continued refusal to release all Christian Armenian hostages wrongfully imprisoned in Azerbaijan and urges their immediate and unconditional release.
