Our state’s overly restrictive ballot access laws deny choices to voters. This is especially egregious in how it works to create single candidate on ballot races.
We are seeing this happen in far too many of this year’s state legislative elections. By my count, 16 out 63 State Senate races and 43 out
of 150 State Assembly races have only one candidate on the ballot. That’s over a 1/4th of state legislative races in both chambers. That’s over 1/4th of voters across the state whose only choice besides voting for the single candidate on the ballot is casting a write-in vote.
Our state needs to repeal the restrictive changes to state ballot access laws that were passed several year ago, pass new standards that give third parties and independents a fair chance of getting on the ballot, and go back to voters having more choices on the ballot.
