In honor of Women’s History Month 2024, the New Rochelle Public Library announces a series of engaging and enlightening events throughout March. From film screenings to virtual presentations, concerts, and theatrical performances, the library invites the community to celebrate the remarkable achievements and contributions of women across history.
The events scheduled for Women’s History Month include:
The ‘Extraordinary Women Film Series’ will take place on Tuesdays, March 5, 19, 26. Join us for three inspiring films celebrating extraordinary women and their accomplishments. The series features captivating stories distributed by Women Make Movies, the world’s leading distributor of independent films by and about women. Discussion and Q&A will follow each screening. March 5, 5:30 – 7:30 pm – Beyond Beijing; March 19, 5:00 – 7:30 pm – A Better Man; March 26, 5:30 – 7:30 pm – Africa is A Woman’s Name
The film series is presented in partnership with Zonta Club New Rochelle, a leading global organization of professionals whose mission is to build a better world for women and girls through service and advocacy.

On Saturday, March 9, 3:00 pm, David Rose, New Rochelle Public Library Archivist and amateur mycologist, will give a virtual presentation on “The Mushrooms of Violetta White Delafield.” Rose will explore the groundbreaking work of American botanist Violetta White Delafield in the field of mycology, and whose accomplishments include the discovery of several new species of mushrooms.
As a horticulturist, Delafield designed the gardens of the Montgomery Place estate on the Hudson River where she lived, and her many watercolor illustrations of mushrooms are a permanent testament to her artistry and contribution to the science of mycology. On Sunday, March 10, 3:00 – 4:30 pm, enjoy “A Capella and More: A Women’s History Month Concert by Counterpoint,” featuring original arrangements of popular music by female artists including Adele, Carole King, Kate Bush, Sara Bareilles, Dua Lipa and more. On Tuesday, March 12, 6:30 – 7:30 pm, take a virtual tour of the New York Historical Society’s exhibit, “Women’s Work,” exploring the pivotal role of women in American society. Registration required at bit.ly/NRPL_WomensWork
On Wednesday, March 13, 11:00 am, explore “Those Bombastic Blonde Bombshells: Monroe, Mansfield, and Van Doren,” a revealing study of iconic blonde actresses and the challenges they faced. Presented virtually by Sal St. George. Registration required at bit.ly/NRPL_Blondes
On Wednesday, March 20, 7:00 – 8:00 pm, join us for a virtual program about the legacy of Mary McLeod Bethune, a pioneering educator, philanthropist, civil rights activist, founder of the National Council of Negro Women, and advisor to Franklin D. On Saturday, March 30, 2:00 – 3:30 pm, experience “Voices and Echoes: Short Play Series,” featuring original plays by women, exploring themes of race, gender, and freedom in American history. The New Rochelle Public Library (NRPL) is a community resource that seeks to improve the life of every citizen in our city.
