New Electric Vehicle Fast Chargers Open in Katonah

Electric vehicle (EV) drivers now have a new convenient fast charging location in downtown Katonah, less than a mile off Interstate 684 and close to numerous services in the quaint historic hamlet in northeastern Westchester County. The New York Power Authority (NYPA) installed the federally funded EVolve NY station so New York State could service more drivers through its fast-charging network and further its efforts to encourage EV adoption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation.

“Communities, like Katonah, that promote cleaner transportation options serve local residents, attract eco-conscious visitors, and showcase a commitment to sustainability and innovation,” said Justin E. Driscoll, Power Authority president and CEO. “This conveniently located high-speed charging station in downtown Katonah, minutes from the highway, illustrates how the Power Authority and the Town of Bedford collaborated to make it even easier for travelers in the Hudson Valley region to drive electric.”

The new EVolve NY charging station in Katonah is off Exit 6 on I-684. The site is one of the largest fast charging sites in the Hudson Valley with six units available. A six-unit station is also located at the North County Shopping Center in Goldens Bridge and a third location will soon open in downtown White Plains. Additional Hudson Valley locations are operational in LaGrangeville and Kingston.

NYPA’s EVolve NY network now has 232 chargers statewide at 56 sites.

Historic Katonah, one of three hamlets in the Town of Bedford, is an easy stop off of I-684 or the Saw Mill River Parkway. The hamlet is a great location for shopping, dining or a stroll and is a convenient option for EV drivers to charge up on a road trip upstate, to New England or while traveling south to NYC and beyond.

“As a proud New York State Climate Smart Community with a strong dedication to economic vitality, Bedford is excited to welcome new fast chargers in Katonah,” said Bedford Town Supervisor Ellen Calves. “This initiative is a win-win—promoting sustainability while boosting opportunities for local businesses by increasing foot traffic in the hamlet. We are honored to be part of this important program and look forward to welcoming EV drivers to experience Katonah.”

While charging, visitors may stroll around Katonah to pick up treats, coffees and takeaways or stop in a locally owned boutique, art gallery or book store on Katonah Avenue. History buffs and visitors looking to get in some steps can plug in and walk around Katonah to experience nineteenth-century Victorian gingerbread houses, lively parks and the charming Gazebo.  A historic walking tour can be followed at https://www.katonahvis.org/katonah-village-history/historic-katonah-self-guided-tours/. With the right timing, visitors can listen to music in the gazebo or attend popular Katonah events such as the annual Fire Department Parade, Art Crawl or Sidewalk Sale.

The Katonah location supports New York’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program corridor buildout and is EVolve NY’s 11th location supporting the program.

The EVolve NY Katonah site includes six chargers located in a town-owned lot at 252 Katonah Ave., directly next to the Katonah Shopping Center. On the Electrify America network, the hub consists of six fast chargers with CCS connectors rated at up to 350 kilowatts. The units are an easy walk to the many restaurants, shops, galleries, and coffee shops in the downtown area.

The new Evolve NY Direct Current Fast Chargers can charge capable electric vehicles in as little as 20 minutes.
