This reporter had the pleasure of joining about 40 other golfers who participated in the celebration of Mohansic Golf Course’s 100th anniversary Golf scramble. July 25, 2025, marked exactly the 100th anniversary of Mohansic Golf Course, located in Yorktown.
The golf outing included a throwback flair, with participants playing with vintage Hickory Stick golf clubs, courtesy of Connecticut Hickory Golf, and retro-style golf balls.
The vintage golf clubs and balls made the usual challenge of Mohansic even more challenging. This reporter had never played with Hickory clubs, and together with my partner, Ian Black, we were able to navigate the front nine at Mohansic.
The 9th hole at Mohansic is one of the longest and most difficult holes out of the six county owned courses.
A dinner after included awards for the lowest score, with one pair shooting a 38 on the par 35 front nine.
Joining the golfers at Mohansic were County Executive Ken Jenkins and Parks Commissioner Kathy O’Connor. “For 100 years, Mohansic Golf Course has been a treasured part of our parks system and a favorite spot for generations of golfers. This celebration is not only about honoring its rich history but also about looking ahead to the next century of recreation and community,” said Jenkins.
O’Connor added: “Mohansic is more than just a golf course. It’s where memories are made. From first swings to family outings, it’s played a special role in Westchester’s story. We’re thrilled to mark this milestone with a fun, inclusive event that golfers can enjoy.”
As part of the celebration, golf rates for Westchester County residents were rolled back for the week of July 21- 24 to ($19.25 for Park Pass holders to walk.
The course was in great shape. Congratulations to the maintenance staff for their work.
Playing with a set of Hickory clubs is a challenge, including a small wooden face driver and a vintage putter.
I recommend this challenge to any golfer, and if Westchester County decides to hold this event again, at any of their courses, give it a try.
For a Yorktown native and Yorktown HS grad, Mohansic was always my favorite course. It is the most challenging of the county courses and a layout that can be matched with some of the private courses in the county.
Whoever thought of this idea in county government, congratulations, it was indeed a great day of golf history that all who played will never forget.
