Mike O’Donnell Steps Down as Stepinac Varsity Head Football Coach After 38 Years

After 38 incredible years of exemplary service and unwavering dedication, Mike O’Donnell, our esteemed Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, has decided to step down from his role as Head Football Coach. Thankfully, he will continue to serve our school as Athletic Director, ensuring his legacy of excellence continues to guide our athletic programs.

Coach O’Donnell’s commitment to Stepinac has been nothing short of extraordinary. For nearly four decades, he has been a steadfast leader, mentor, and role model, shaping the lives of thousands of students and players. His care, concern, and tireless efforts have left an indelible mark on our school community.

“We are deeply grateful to Coach Mike O’Donnell for his decades of dedication and the profound impact he has had on our students, our program, and our community. His leadership and commitment have left an indelible mark on Stepinac, and we are fortunate that he will continue to serve as our Athletic Director,” said the President of Stepinac High School, Rev. Thomas Collins ’79.

He is the epitome of a Catholic high school coach: loyal, steadfast, and a man of unwavering integrity. Under his leadership, the football program has thrived, not just in victories but in cultivating young men of character and faith. His dedication has truly set the standard for what it means to serve with passion and purpose.

Coach O’Donnell compiled 238 wins and became Varsity Head Coach in the fall of 1988. He is the winningest coach in the history of Stepinac.

As we celebrate Coach O’Donnell’s unparalleled contributions, we are excited to announce that AJ Magee will become the seventh varsity head coach in Stepinac history. A former Stepinac coach with deep ties to our community, Coach Magee brings valuable experience and a proven track record of success at the collegiate level.

We are confident that under Coach Magee’s leadership, the program will continue to flourish and uphold the tradition of excellence established by Coach O’Donnell. We look forward to the next chapter for Stepinac Football in such capable hands.
