In their first ever season, the Yonkers Pride Girls Flag Football team won its first game ever in its history. The team is made up of girls from all 8 high schools in Yonkers.
Yonkers beat Somers High School 13-8. They did this after trialing 8-0 by giving up a safety and a loan Somers touchdown. After a couple of stalled drives, Yonkers’ QB Kelsey DeRubeis got the offense clicking with two touchdown passes one for 30 yards and the second for 20 yards to Adrianna Quishpe for the first touchdown of the game. Then with 17:25 to go in the 2nd half, Kelsey DeRubeis rumbled into the end zone for a 10 yard touchdown rush. She later finds Kaitlyn De La Cruz for the 1 point conversion.
Then Yonkers defense led by Yaleliza Salas, Maya De Sena, and Elizabeth Wallace, had a series of stops and shut out Somers the rest of the game. In the end, with 35 seconds on the clock, and five yards to go, Adriana Quishpe ices the game with a 12 yard rush up the gut behind blockers Janel Martin, and Samantha Campos to secure the win for Yonkers!
Coaches Elie Moise & Nuriel Benitez are very happy, and proud of the girls! They made history, and won their first game in their first season of a brand new sport!
