Maria Regina HS Honors Greatest Generaton on 80th Anniversay of VE Day

Maria Regina, the renowned all-girls Catholic High School, recently honored the Greatest Generation on the 80th anniversary of VE Day with special events. They included guest speaker Sharon Engelman Colabello, pictured above, daughter of a decorated WW II veteran and noted Ardsley resident and business owner, Martin Engleman.

She spoke about her father’sservice as a sergeant in the U.S. Army with students in the Junior History and English classes. and how it inspired her to lead the successful Military Tribute Banners initiative for the Village of Ansley and other communities.

As part of Colabello’s presentation, she shared some of the letters her late father wrote home when he served during World War II. In one of the attached photos, she proudly displays a photo of her father. On the wall behind her is an extensive array of photos of Greatest Generation members of the families of students, administration, faculty and staff.

In the second photo, students review photos of Martin Engleman that Sharon used in her presentation about how her father exemplified the Greatest Generation.

The students have also undertaken a virtual Greatest Generation Wall of Honor comprising photos and profiles of family members among others who served in that epic conflict against tyranny. It is an ongoing project that will be archived on the school’s website, www.MariaRegina.org, where other photos from Colabello’s visit can be viewed.

As a post on the site notes: “We’re grateful to Sharon for helping preserve the memory and values of the Greatest Generation. We thank, we remember, we honor the Greatest Generation always.”
