The defendant allegedly forced his way into victim’s home in violation of an order of protection before shooting her
On Jan. 5, 2024, Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah and Sleepy Hollow Police Chief Anthony Bueti announced that a man has been arraigned after his arrest for attempted murder in the shooting of his ex-girlfriend in Sleepy Hollow.
DA Rocah said: “We will do everything we can do to support this victim who survived terrifying violence allegedly inflicted by a former intimate partner. I thank the Sleepy Hollow Police Department and our law enforcement partners for their efforts in locating and arresting this defendant as swiftly as possible.”
Chief Bueti said: “I applaud all of our officers and detectives for the thorough investigation, and quick response, which helped to ensure there were no threats to the community or our schools. Our thoughts are with the victim and her family.”
The defendant, Ruben Santiago, 38, was arrested on Jan. 3 by the Sleepy Hollow Police Department and arraigned before Judge Katherine Baldwin in Sleepy Hollow Village Court on felony charges of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Attempted Assault in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, and Aggravated Criminal Contempt. He was remanded to Westchester County Jail. His next court date is Jan. 22.
It is alleged that at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 2, the defendant, in violation of an order of protection, forcibly entered the Sleepy Hollow home of his ex-girlfriend, and shot her with a .38 caliber revolver. The victim, who suffered gunshot wounds to her neck and hand, is being treated at an area hospital for her injuries.
The Sleepy Hollow Police Department conducted the investigation, with the assistance of the FBI’s Westchester Safe Streets Task Force, Westchester County’s Real Time Crime Center, the Greenburgh Drug and Alcohol Task Force, the New York Police Department, and the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.
The case is being prosecuted by Domestic Violence Deputy Bureau Chief Janelle Armentano and Assistant District Attorney Omar Youssef, both of the Special Prosecutions Division.
The charges against the defendant are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

This afternoon the Sleepy Hollow Police Dept. responded to the area of Chestnut St. and Valley St. for the report of a person shot. Officers arrived on the scene and confirmed that a person had been shot inside a private residence and the suspect had fled. A thorough investigation commenced immediately and proved no threat to the community or our schools. This was not a random act of violence and our thoughts are with the victim and families.
