Republicans are spreading lies about the Democrats’ reasons for not supporting the federal funding bill causing the government to shut down. Propaganda of this sort is basically false information that is distributed to cause harm and to advance a political cause.
What is the false information the Republicans are promoting about the government shut down?
This statement is typical of emails I have received from Republican congressmen. The Democrats are “hold[ing] the American people hostage to provide free tax payer-funded healthcare to illegal immigrants.”
The truth is people, who are in the United States unlawfully, are not eligible to get federally funded health insurance. They cannot sign up for Medicaid or Medicare. They cannot get federally subsidized coverage through the Affordable Care Act online marketplace. It is against the law and there are systems in place to prevent this type of fraud.
The only time one might hear of an undocumented worker getting healthcare would be because of EMTALA, which was signed into law by President Reagan in 1986. It states no person regardless of ability to pay can be turned away from the emergency room because of a life-threatening condition. I don’t believe anybody reading this would want a person, who was having a heart attack or an appendicitis attack, turned away from the emergency room.
What is the harm that this bit of propaganda is causing?
In this funding bill Democrats are attempting to extend a Biden era initiative to avoid an increase in health insurance premiums by as much as 75% expected to affect 20 million people. Democrats also want to undo Medicaid cuts projected to leave nearly 10 million Americans uninsured. Democrats are determined to prevent these harms, which will affect hard working families beginning in 2026.
Lastly, what political cause do the Republicans want to advance by promoting this propaganda?
Republicans are essentially taking health care away from millions of people in order to finance tax cuts for their ultra wealthy donors.
Also, the divisive rhetoric is aimed against both Democrats and undocumented immigrants. Here’s the message (now removed) from Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary recorded on the comment line:
“Hello America. Democrats in Congress have shut down the federal government because they care more about funding healthcare for illegal immigrants than they care about serving you, the American people….. Please know President Trump will never stop fighting for you.”
The Republicans are not telling you that it is their responsibility to negotiate with the Democrats to fund the government. Republicans are in the majority in both houses of Congress. They needed to take the initiative to compromise, so they could have gotten Democrats’ votes in order to pass the bill which would have kept the government open. The Republicans have failed in this and bear the responsibility for the shutdown.
It is important for all of us, not to believe the harmful propaganda Republicans are promoting and to encourage our representatives to work together to reopen the government.
