Legislator David Tubiolo recently hosted his first “Coffee, Cocktails & Conversation” at Maggie Spillane’s in the City of Mount Vernon. The event attracted about a dozen people from the Fleetwood neighborhood, in which Tubiolo discussed current events in the county and plans for the future, and helped residents with constituent issues.

“Fleetwood is the beating heart of Mount Vernon – the community, heritage, history and culture is unique and must be promoted,” said Tubiolo. “I couldn’t have thought of a better place to host our first ‘Coffee, Cocktails & Conversation’ than in Fleetwood. I plan on hosting future endeavors for Fleetwood in different aspects of life, such as athletics, business, constituent services and senior events.”

Fleetwood hosts several known institutions, St. Peter & Paul and St. Ursula Church, Montfort Academy, Fleetwood Synagogue, Pennington Elementary School, and Fleetwood Train Station.

Before 1850, the neighborhood of Fleetwood was the name of a farm owned by Jonas Farrington. In the early 1850s, he sold 94 acres to John Stevens, and then purchased four other farms. He divided the land into 50-by-100-foot plots and built homes, developing one of the first planned subdivisions in the country.

There were roughly 1,000 lots and it was incorporated as the Village of Mount Vernon, decades later.
