Westchester County Executive George Latimer endorsed Yadira Ramos-Herbert for New Rochelle Mayor on June 26, one day before the democratic primary on June 27.
In a video statement, Latimer said “You have an opportunity to cast a vote for New Rochelle’s future. Campaigns don’t often talk about the future. And sometimes candidates will choose to make their campaign about negativity, about attacking their opponent, about raising issues that are designed to make you vote against somebody rather than for your interests.
“Yadira Ramos-Herbert has not run that type of campaign. She has talked about the future of New Rochelle. She has talked about affordable housing, she has talked about climate change, she has talked about reaching out to all corners of this community.
“That’s a positive message for New Rochelle’s future and that’s the kind of message you can build on and grow on in the years to come,” said Latimer.
Ramos-Herbert is in the middle of a hotly contested democratic primary with county legislator Damon Maher. And while not using his name in the video, as the only other candidate in this democratic primary for New Rochelle Mayor, the inference is that Maher has run a negative campaign against Ramos-Herbert.
But the other thing we are hearing, and the reason why after all of the endorsements Ramos-Herbert has received in this democratic primary, Maher can still win on June 27. He has knocked on doors; thousands of doors meeting residents and asking for their vote.
But Latimer’s endorsement of Ramos-Herbert is significant. The Westchester County Executive is one of the most popular, if not the most popular elected Democrat in the county. And as an elder statesman of sorts, what he has to say means something, and will result in a bump for Ramos-Herbert.
But this one-Ain’t Over Till It’s Over-and may come down to absentee ballots.
