Karen E. Alonso-Mathura Awarded Dennis Richmond Scholarship for Black Excellence

Karen E. Alonso-Mathura is the seventh student from Yonkers to be awarded the Dennis E. Richmond, Jr. Scholarship for Black Excellence. The scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving graduating senior. Karen is an 18-year-old graduate of Roosevelt High School Early College Studies. She has done work as a community organizer and is an extremely hard worker at her current place of employment.

Karen will be attending Barnard of Columbia University in the fall. Richmond called her personally on June 28th to tell her the news. When she received the phone call, she said that it “feels good… and exciting.” Out of all the scholarships Karen applied to, Richmond was the first call back that she received. She expects to hear back from others in July.

Karen is determined to build a rewarding future for herself by putting in all of her hard work now. By applying for scholarships, Karen is making sure that college is a reality. She’s headed to school this fall to embark on her journey of becoming a cosmetic plastic surgeon. As of 2015, there were less than 7,000 active cosmetic plastic surgeons. Her career choice is one to be commended.

Congratulations and best of luck!
