The City of Yonkers and Yonkers Public School opened the Justice Sonia Sotomayor Community School (JSSCS) to students this week. The JSSCS is the first new school in the City of Yonkers in over 20 years.The new 95,000sf community school, houses 675 students in grades Pre-K through 8th and includes spaces for art, science, special projects, dual language curriculum, and computer science. Designed to be a community resource, the physical education wing, and a community health clinic function as a stand-alone community resource after school and on the weekends.
KG+D Architects, PC designed the school. With a focus on sustainability, the school incorporates an all-electric heat pump heating and cooling system, photovoltaic solar panels on the roof, a partial green roof, extensive daylighting, and low-water-use plumbing fixtures. The use of low VOC and recycled materials further underscores the school’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
The Pre-K-8 school envisions a future where our students achieve high levels of multi-cultural competence. We are dedicated to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable environment that nurtures a generation of culturally responsive leaders who champion social justice, celebrate diversity, and contribute towards positive change in the school community and beyond. The Justice Sonia Sotomayor Community School aims to empower students enrolled in our dual language program to become bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural individuals.
