Indian Flag Raising at Yonkers City Hall

The City of Yonkers recently celebrated the 78th Anniversary of Indian Independence Day, with a flag raising of the Indian Flag at City Hall. Mayor Spano hosted a flag raising to celebrate the perseverance, ingenuity, and unwavering spirit of the Indian American community. “We recognize the invaluable role they play in shaping the future of the country. From pioneering innovations in technology and medicine to enriching the cultural landscape through the arts, Indian Americans have left an indelible mark,” said Mayor Spano.

City Councilman Anthony Merante said, “We saluted our great Yonkers Indian American community with a flag raising ceremony at City Hall’s Unity Fountain. The master of ceremonies was my friend Harry Singh. The invocation was by Arun Bhagirath of the Hindu Temple of Tri-State and Rev. John Philip of St. Thomas Mar Thomas Church . The guest speaker was Jagdish Mitter, President of the Indian American Council of Westchester.”

Assemblyman Nader Sayegh was also in attendance. On August 15, 1947, Indian declared its independence from the United Kingdom.
