Dear Residents,
The Crime Prevention Unit of the Hastings on Hudson Police Department would like to make residents aware of several petit larcenies from unlocked vehicles that occurred within our community overnight between July 12th and July 13th.
In all the incidents reported, individual(s) entered vehicles that had been left UNLOCKED and removed personal property. These incidents appear to have been crimes of opportunity, with the suspect(s) targeting vehicles that were easily accessible by simply pulling on door handles.
Our officers are actively investigating these incidents and keeping an extra watchful eye out for suspicious activity, especially in the overnight hours. We ask anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious, or those who have home security or doorbell camera footage from any of these incidents to contact the Police Department.
While no precaution can completely prevent crime, the following steps can significantly reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of vehicle larcenies:
- Always lock your vehicle, even if it is parked in your driveway.
- Remove valuables such as wallets, purses, cash, electronics, firearms, and important documents from your vehicle whenever possible.
- If you must leave items in your vehicle, store items out of sight before leaving your vehicle.
- Take your keys and key fobs with you and never leave a spare key inside the vehicle.
- Ensure all windows and sunroofs are fully closed.
- Park in well-lit areas whenever possible and consider using motion-activated exterior lighting at your home.
- If available, utilize home security cameras or doorbell cameras, and ensure they are functioning properly.
- Report any suspicious persons or vehicles in your neighborhood immediately. Prompt reporting allows officers to respond quickly and may help prevent additional crimes.
