Chabad of Yonkers Rabbi Mendy Hurwitz Celebrates his 39th Birthday Serving the Community By Robert Kalfus Dozens of Chabad of Yonkers members, their families, friends, and many who have various connections with Rabbi Mendy Hurwitz celebrated his 39th birthday party this past Sunday, July 24th.
This was the 15th occasion when Rabbi Mendy welcomed the community to his birthday with a free, lavish kosher BBQ, an extensive menu of kosher hot dogs and hamburgers in buns, French fries, watermelon, cotton candy, cold drinks, a bottle of water, and birthday cake for dessert.Rabbi Hurwitz sweated over a hot grill, while wearing a blue apron stating in Hebrew and English “Mensch”, meaning a good, caring human being, a birthday present from Robyn Fullerton, while serving up a kosher BBQ.
In the broiling heat, this hard-working Rabbi himself manned the grill for hours, producing well-cooked hotdogs and hamburgers, feeding dozens of people who took refuge in the shade trees outside, or for a few, in the synagogue’s air conditioning. Westchester County George Latimer and Assemblyman Nader Sayegh both spoke of their friendships, respect and many interactions and meetings with Rabbi Mendy, noting the many ways that he seeks to deepen people’s joy, happiness and connection with each other and building a stable and peaceful community.
In addition to Rabbi Hurwitz’ regular Wednesday night Torah discussion and learning class on ZOOM, the synagogue is adding additional activities and classes.
