Holocaust Survivor Gets Visit from YPD, YFD & Mayor
This is another great idea, and one unique to Yonkers for the moment.
Members of Yonkers Finest and Yonkers Bravest have been greeting residents at their homes for their 100th Birthday and beyond.
Mayor Mike Spano joined in the recent visit. He writes, “Today, I had the profound honor of celebrating a truly extraordinary The City of Yonkers resident, Alex Abramowicz. He turned 100 last month, but the blizzard blanketed his plans.
Surrounded by members of our Yonkers Police Department and Yonkers Fire Department , we gathered at his home to recognize a century of life, resilience, and quiet strength. When we arrived, Alex humbly asked, “What did I do to deserve this?” The answer is simple: everything.
At just 13 years old, Alex’s life was forever changed when Nazi forces invaded his hometown of Piotrków Trybunalski in Poland. He endured unimaginable hardship, surviving the first Jewish ghetto of the war, losing family members, and ultimately being liberated from a concentration camp in 1945. His story is one of survival against all odds, of perseverance in the face of darkness.
When he came to America, Alex became a gardener at Montefiore Hospital, and met his wife of 67 years, Laura.
Reaching 100 years old is a remarkable milestone. But reaching it with a story like Alex’s, one of courage, loss, love, and renewal, is nothing short of extraordinary.
Yonkers is stronger, richer, and more compassionate because of people like Alex Abramowicz. We celebrate not just his 100 years, but the legacy he continues to inspire in all of us. “
