Groundwork Hudson Valley Welcomes New Executive Director, Karin Sosis

Karin Sosis

After an extensive and highly competitive search, the Board of Directors of Groundwork Hudson Valley announced that Karin Sosis has been appointed Executive Director, with her tenure beginning February 2nd. Karin brings a global perspective to the environmental justice work that has defined Groundwork for the past 25 years.

After earning her bachelor’s degree from Duke University, Karin began her career in finance and book publishing in New York City. During that time, she developed a deep concern about environmental degradation and climate change. Motivated to align her work with her values, she pursued a master’s degree in Environment and Development at the London School of Economics – at a moment of rising global urgency following Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth and Lord Nicholas Stern’s landmark review on the economics of climate change.

K.arin went on to spend 15 years in Africa working as a technical advisor and project manager focused on renewable energy, energy efficiency, climate change adaptation, energy access and financing, regenerative agriculture, green infrastructure, and environmental justice.  In the African context, as is here in the United States, these challenges are intertwined with issues of social equity, access to finance, and economic opportunity. She worked with national governments, investors, companies and civic organizations in 25 countries to support a fair transition away from fossil fuels.

“Karin brings a unique set of skills to a unique organization,” said Board Co-Chair Natasha Fapohunda. “Her international experience aligns seamlessly with Groundwork’s long-term commitment to improving climate resilience, enhancing quality of life, and expanding economic opportunity in partnership with local stakeholders at the forefront of climate and equity challenges. Her dedication to strengthening communities and shaping bold solutions makes her exceptionally well prepared to lead this organization.”

Originally from New Rochelle, Karin has lived in London, Liberia, Zambia, and Kenya. She returned to the United States with her family in July 2025 and shared that she is “delighted to join Groundwork at a time when climate action is more important than ever.” She looks forward to leading Groundwork’s seasoned team and collaborating with its partners, counterparts, and supporters to build more vibrant, resilient communities throughout the region.
