Maloney says as DCCC Chair, he will not make a decision on whether to fund his own campaign
Why did House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy decide to spend $4 Million in the final weeks of the Congressional race in NY-17 between Sean Patrick Maloney and Mike Lawler? Why are some Westchester democrats “not felling good” about Maloney’s chances, as the momentum across the country for republicans lands in the Hudson Valley of New York?
McCarthy’s announcement resulted in Maloney making a strange comment, that as Chair of the DCCC, the House Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, he will not decide whether the DCCC will invest in his own race. “I have decided to recuse myself from any spending decisions involving my own race. We’ll let the professional staff handle that.”
That odd proclamation had many scratching their heads. “Did the “professional staff” make the decision to force Rep. Mondaire Jones out of the race?” and “Find myself searching for that Animal House “B-sh-t!” clip.” were tweeted by Lawler campaign manager Bill O’Reilly.
Others thought that the announcement “showed weakness.” “I thought Maloney was in trouble before he announced that as chair of the DCCC he wasn’t going to spend on his own race? Who believes that and if you want to believe it, then does that mean that you don’t consider your race worth spending in?” said one Westchester democratic leader. “He (Maloney) just isn’t inspiring anybody to get out and volunteer for him. And I think all democrats in New York are going to need people to get out and knock on doors.”
