“COMMON SENSE LEADERSHIP AND SOLUTIONS” THAT PUT “PROGRESS OVER POSTURING”
On March 8, Westchester County Legislator Vedat Gashi officially launched his campaign for New York’s 16th Congressional District Democratic nomination with a pledge to champion Democratic values and principles that deliver for everyday New Yorkers. Last month, Gashi filed with the Federal Election Commission and has been raising money and support up to his official announcement.
In announcing his campaign, Gashi spoke to his deep roots within the district, “My family came to America as refugees. I grew up in the Bronx and now I’m raising my family in Westchester. This country gave my family a chance at the American dream. My campaign is about ensuring that all New Yorkers have a shot at the American dream by fighting to protect working families and expanding the middle class.
“Our country is at a critical point in terms of domestic and foreign policy. But with a struggling economy, failing infrastructure, and voting and reproductive rights under assault, we need leadership that unites our country towards a common purpose. On the international stage, the world is pulling together to isolate and punish Russia for its unprovoked attack against the Ukrainian people. As a refugee, I know firsthand the importance of the world speaking with one voice in the face of aggression. Whether it’s leading on issues at home or abroad, our community deserves a representative who is in line with our party’s core values, will put progress before posturing and will work to get things done,” says Gashi who is challenging first term congressman, Jamaal Bowman in the June 28th primary.
“I believe in the promise of America and what we can achieve when we’re united. I look forward to continuing my conversation with residents to learn more about their concerns and share my vision of how we can strengthen our country and create a fairer New York that works for everyone.”
Vedat Gashi lives and works in his hometown of Yorktown with his wife and two kids who attend public school. Vedat is an attorney and active member of the Yorktown Democratic Party where he serves as a Democratic District Leader. In 2019, he was elected to serve the Westchester County Board of Legislators, representing the 4th Legislative District. In 2021, he was re-elected and currently serves as the Chair of the Budget and Appropriations Committee where he oversees Westchester County’s $2.2 billion budget.
The 16th Congressional District in New York was redrawn this year, and runs from the Bronx north through Westchester and into Putnam County.
