Historic Hudson Valley announces the expansion of its blockbuster event, Irving’s “Legend,” the dramatic retelling of Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” with more performances than ever before. The Halloween tradition at the Old Dutch Church now features both afternoon and evening performances on select dates in October.
Master storyteller Jim Keyes will be the featured performer for the afternoon performances at Sleepy Hollow’s circa-1685 Old Dutch Church. Keyes also provides musical accompaniment for renowned master storyteller Jonathan Kruk, who continues to bring the classic tale to life during evening performances.
“Jim Keyes has been a part of Irving’s ‘Legend’ since the beginning, accompanying Jonathan Kruk on the organ,” said Historic Hudson Valley’s Vice President of Communications and Commerce Rob Schweitzer. “We are thrilled to add his voice and storytelling talents to the afternoon performances, giving more opportunities for ‘Legend’ aficionados to enjoy this one-of-a-kind, perennially sold-out event.”
“When I was a kid, I actually had a poster of the Headless Horseman U.S. postage stamp hanging on my wall,” said Keyes. “I’ve had the privilege of accompanying Master Storyteller Jonathan Kruk for years now, and am excited to continue to do so. I’m also excited to be getting out from behind the organ to put my own spin on the tale. I’ll be accompanied by master musician Ayodele Maakheru, who will bring his own flavor to the performance.”
Kruk and Keyes offer dramatic retellings of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” featuring the Headless Horseman, Ichabod Crane, Brom Bones and Katrina Van Tassel. Flavored with live spooky organ music, the event takes place in the historic setting of the Old Dutch Church in Sleepy Hollow. The circa-1685 stone church is across the street from Philipsburg Manor, where visitors may park.
Performances last about 45 minutes. The event is recommended for ages 10 and older.
“Legend” dates are Oct. 5 to 7, 12 to 14, 19 to 21, and 25 to 31. Seating is limited and there are three performances on weekday evenings and six performances on weekends. Online tickets are $25 for adults, and $20 for children younger than 18. Historic Hudson Valley members receive a $5-per-ticket discount.
