Every year, the East Yonkers Kiwanis honors Yonkers residents over the age of 90 for their contributions to their families and communities throughout their long lives. This year, on Oct. 21 at Riverview Caterers, 11 were honored – six women and five men – including 100-year-old Frank Marra.
Those honored were surrounded by their family and friends to celebrate their lives. Biographies of their lives were read and their secrets to their long lives were shared. Dancers from the New York Studio of Irish Step Dance entertained the crowd.
Several local officials attended and showed their support for Kiwanis and the honorees, including Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins, County Legislator David Tubiolo, City Council President Mike Khader, Yonkers Councilman Michael Sabatino, and a representative from Mayor Mike Spano’s Office.
Also recognized was Katori Walker, whose grandmother Thelma Jenkins was one of the 90-plus honorees. Walker is the coordinator of the Wow Yonkers Art Project 100 words of Wisdom from the Seniors of Yonkers.
East Yonkers Kiwanis member Rosemary Uzzo made a presentation to Walker at the event.
