Domestic incident on I-684 in Bedford under investigation

On March 17, 2026, at approximately 11:50 a.m., New York State Police Troopers and Investigators from the Somers barracks responded to a report of a domestic dispute inside a vehicle on Interstate 684 in the Town of Bedford.

The investigation determined that during the incident, the operator of a 2025 Land Rover, John Kijek, 59, of Bedford Hills, New York, was traveling southbound and stopped in the U-Turn of I-684. At that time, a female victim exited the vehicle.

As a responding Trooper arrived on scene and began investigating, the male operator suddenly fled on foot, running across the northbound lanes of Interstate 684 near mile post marker 15.8. While attempting to cross, he was struck by a 2015 Honda Odyssey traveling northbound.

Kijek sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local medical facility. The operator of the Honda was not injured.

Following the investigation, Kijek was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Reckless Endangerment 1st, a class D felony
  • Criminal Mischief 3rd, a class E felony
  • Unlawful Imprisonment 1st, a class E felony
  • Menacing 3rd, a class B misdemeanor
  • Criminal Mischief 4th, a class A misdemeanor

Kijek was arraigned before a Town of Mount Pleasant judge. Kijek was remanded to the Westchester County Jail. He is scheduled to appear at the Bedford Justice Court on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at 3:30 PM.
