Last week, Assemblymember Nader Sayegh and City Councilwoman Tasha Diaz presented certificates of merit to the winners and participants of the Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest co-hosted by Diaz and Yonkers Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Edwin Quezada.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest was held at Cross Hill Academy and Scholastic Academy for Academic Excellence for seventh- and eighth-graders. The theme of the essay was “Linking Everyone’s Cultures for a Unified World,” and the students presented their ideas on how to unite everyone through culture.
“This Black History Month, it’s important that our children understand the historic struggle and sacrifices made by individuals to make our world a better place,” said Sayegh. “Thanks to the legacy of MLK’s dream, two people of color who grew up attending Yonkers Public Schools have the opportunity to serve their community as elected officials. We’d also like to thank the wonderful educators, parents, and administrators at Yonkers Public Schools, Cross Hill Academy, and my own alma mater The Scholastic Academy, who made this event possible. We can’t wait until these children grow up and advance the legacy of Dr. King with future generations.”
Diaz is also chairwoman of the council’s Education Committee.
