David Gentner Named to City & State’s 2026 Trailblazers in Healthcare

City & State’s 2026 Trailblazers in Healthcare—a list recognizing New York’s leading policymakers, providers, and practitioners—has named David J. Gentner, Ed.D., President and CEO of Wartburg, among this year’s honorees. The Trailblazers in Healthcare awards celebrate advocates, innovators, executives, and experts who are transforming healthcare and improving patient outcomes across New York and beyond.

Dr. Gentner leads Wartburg, a premier senior care and housing provider in Mount Vernon. During his tenure, Wartburg has experienced unprecedented growth, including the opening of a 71,000-square-foot Rehabilitation and Adult Day Services Center and a 61-apartment affordable senior housing community praised by The New York Times. Both developments are environmentally progressive and LEED-certified.

Wartburg Nursing Home stands as a beacon of excellence in senior care in the heart of Mount Vernon, New York. It is widely recognized for quality and safety, earning a CMS 5-Star Rating and designation by U.S. News & World Report as one of New York State’s top nursing homes based on outcomes and expert assessments. According to ProPublica, these distinctions reflect Wartburg’s sustained commitment to high-quality, resident-centered care.

Reflecting evolving models of senior living, Wartburg is transforming its former 160-bed nursing facility into a modern affordable senior housing community featuring 102 studio and one-bedroom apartments, integrated supportive services, and an adult day program. This adaptive reuse supports independence, community integration, and seamless access to care.

Under Dr. Gentner’s leadership, the Council for Creative Aging and Lifelong Learning has developed an award-winning, internationally recognized arts-based program that leverages Westchester County’s community and volunteer resources to promote self-expression and self-esteem among older adults. A graduate of St. John Fisher University, Dr. Gentner’s research focuses on music, dementia, and quality of life in assisted living environments.

Wartburg has expanded its rehabilitation services through partnerships with outpatient providers such as Burke Rehabilitation, delivering accessible on-campus care that supports faster post-acute recovery, ongoing mobility maintenance, and improved functional outcomes for older adults.

Wartburg’s Berkemeier Living Center—recipient of a 2024 Architecture & Design Award from Senior Housing News—demonstrates the organization’s commitment to specialized memory care. The 50,500-square-foot facility includes 64 residences designed around a small-household model that encourages independence and social engagement. Tunable circadian lighting systems support sleep, appetite, and cognitive function and are recognized as a non-pharmacological approach that may help reduce cognitive decline.

Dr. Gentner was nominated by Dr. Darren M. Morton, Comptroller of the City of Mount Vernon. The award was presented on January 29 at Midtown Loft & Terrace, 267 Fifth Avenue. New York State Senator Gustavo Rivera, Chair of the Senate Committee on Health, served as keynote speaker.
