The Charter School for Educational Excellence recently received test scores from the State Education Department that shows CSEE students, once again, outperforming students in the Yonkers Public Schools on the English language arts and math exams in grades three through eight.
The results for the 2017-18 school year also show that CSEE students were succeeding at a higher rate than the average of all students in Westchester County, students in other charter schools in New York State, and the average scores of students in the state.
The following ELA results show CSEE students meeting or achieving higher than the standard in: grade three – 77 percent, grade four – 83 percent, grade five – 42 percent, grade six – 67 percent, grade seven – 67 percent, and grade eight – 66 percent.
CSEE students performed at the highest levels in ELA exams for grades three and four, with three out of four CSEE students meeting the state standard, while only 30 percent of students in YPS met the standard at the same grade level, and just more than 50 percent of students throughout the state and in Westchester public schools met the standard in grades three and four.
On the math exam, CSEE students performed at the same levels of success, with the following meeting or exceeding the standard in: grade three – 77 percent, grade four – 82 percent, grade five – 47 percent, grade six – 67 percent, and grade seven – 84 percent.
More than three out of four CSEE students in grades three, four and seven met or exceeded the standard on the math exam, far outperforming math scores in YPS, by 32 percent; other charter schools, by 61 percent; Westchester schools, by 55 percent; and the statewide average, less than 50 percent.
“We finally received our state scores for the 2017-18 school year testing,” said CSEE Principal Cindy Lopez. “Overall, CSEE did very well and I just received a call from the New York State Education Department congratulating us. This would be the first set of scores for our new charter renewal period (2018-23). As always, thank you for your continuous support and faith in my ability to lead our school.”
The good news on CSEE test scores comes on the heels of a decision this summer by the Board of Regents to allow a charter high school to be built in Yonkers next to CSEE’s kindergarten-through-grade-eight school off Warburton Avenue. The new charter high school will welcome its first class of students in the fall of 2019.
On Sept. 29, CSEE students were invited to MetLife Stadium to ring the opening bell for the New York Giants vs. New Orleans Saints football game. The students represented the NFL Fuel Up To Play 60 program as one of the top schools nationwide to implement and sustain the program over the past seven years. Fuel Up To Play 60 is a program sponsored by the National Football League and American Dairy Association to promote the importance of healthy eating and physical activity in schools.
“We are extremely proud of the opportunities that this program has provided our students with this past weekend and for the past seven years in creating a culture focused around healthy eating and increased physical activity in schools,” said health and physical education teacher, and Athletic Director Michael DeSimone.
