Westchester County Legislator Jose Alvarado recently joined Yonkers City Council Majority Leader Corazon Pineda Isaac, the Yonkers South Broadway Business Improvement District and its Executive Director Jessica Gordon and the Yonkers Hispanic Cultural Foundation, Inc. in distributing 700 hot meals to seniors in honor of Mother’s Day on Friday and Saturday, May 7 and 8. The sponsors were joined by volunteers, including members of the Yonkers Fire Department.
Leg. Alvarado said, “It was such an uplifting and humbling experience to be able to deliver hot meals to seniors in our community. We are all at our best, and our community is stronger, when we are able to support one another. That is especially the case now, during the COVID pandemic, when so many of our seniors may face financial challenges and social isolation, having difficulty getting out and staying connected. I would like to thank all of the volunteers who joined us to brighten people’s day this Mother’s Day weekend. And I’ll like to extend particular thanks to Yonkers Fire Department Captain Danny Alicea for all his help.”
After the meal distribution, volunteers joined others at the Mom Zen Den event at Lincoln Memorial Park where here was music, kids crafts, heart health screening and information, lunch at no expense or effort for moms and the opportunity to take pictures with two of our finest Yonkers firefighters. The Lincoln Park event was held in collaboration with the Yonkers South Broadway BID, St. Joseph’s Medical Center, the Yonkers YWCA, and Fidelis Care.
Legislator Alvarado, running for re-election in a democratic primary on June 22 against former County Legislator Virginia Perez and community activist London Reyes, recently received the endorsement from State Senator Shelley Mayer. “I’m proud to endorse Jose Alvarado for re-election as County Legislator. As the first Hispanic Member of the Board of Legislators, Jose knows how to represent all the people of Southwest Yonkers. He has been a tireless worker at the Board and in the community. Because of his efforts, the County will build a new waterfront park in the district. During the pandemic, he has been active serving food and providing masks to the community and helped establish the vaccination site conveniently located at the Yonkers Armory,” said Sen. Mayer. “Jose Alvarado has been a tireless worker for all the neighborhoods in his district. I look forward to our continuing to work together to improve the quality of life for all the people of Yonkers.”
Yonkers Democratic Committee Chair Tom Meier, reminded Yonkers democrats that Alvarado has the support and endorsement from the Democratic City Committee. “The Yonkers Democratic City Committee is proud to endorse Jose Alvarado for County Legislator. Jose’s progressive values have been evident in his efforts to improve the local quality of life through affordable housing, social services, and community involvement. During the pandemic Jose went to work helping people get vaccinated, opening a vaccine center in downtown Yonkers and delivering food to people unable to leave their homes. Together with the Mayor, he established a much-needed Yonkers Youth Bureau.”
The Chair continued: “Jose is the real Democrat in this race and he deserves your support.”
