America is a nation built on immigration, and like much of the country, Westchester County has become a place for people from all over the world to come and start a new and better life. Westchester is an ideal location for new citizens, with safe communities, top-level school systems, and home to the headquarters of major international companies like Pepsi and MasterCard.

In 2019, Westchester County Clerk Tim Idoni had the privilege of swearing-in 2,629 of these new citizens. During his time as clerk, he was sworn in more than 37,000.

Naturalization ceremonies are typically held twice a month and always on Thursdays in the Richard Daronco County Courthouse in White Plains. Ceremonies are presided over by a Supreme Court justice, but coordinated by the County Clerk’s Office and the clerk himself administers the oath. After citizens are sworn in and take a picture with the judge and Idoni, they can head to the next room where the clerk’s staff assists them with applying for their first U.S. passport. The County Board of Elections also assists with voter registration.

“There are many duties of the county clerk, but, in all honesty, administering the oath to new citizens is probably my favorite,” said Idoni. “Many of the people there have been waiting a long time, and becoming a U.S. citizen is a dream come true for them. To be able to be even a small part of it is truly a great honor.”

Idoni and his staff will continue to welcome new citizens to the U.S. and Westchester County in 2020, with 23 ceremonies scheduled.
