In an effort to keep kids busy during the summer months, Councilwoman Corazon Pineda-Isaac decided to organize recreational activities for the youth of Yonkers. Her first two such events have been extremely successful, and she said she hopes to continue to provide similar opportunities moving forward.
Pineda-Isaac held her very first CP2 Tennis Camp from July 15 to 19 for kids age 7 to 13. This was the first time any of these kids had ever played tennis. They learned the basics of the sport and walked away with brand new tennis rackets, medals and T-shirts. Trophies were given out to the “most valuable player” and most improved, and two of the camp participants were surprised with scholarships to attend a two-week Tennis Camp session offered by the Yonkers Department of Parks and Recreation.
This was made possible thanks to the support of the Parks and Recreation Department and Deputy Commissioner Steve Sansone, as well as Yonkers Public Schools and Superintendent Dr. Edwin Quezada, who permitted the use of the gymnasium at the Cesar Chavez School during the one day of heavy rain.
The Ryu Family of Englewood Cliffs, N.J., and Jay from Ninja Tennis Academy were instrumental in the execution of the camp from beginning to end.
On July 30, Pineda-Isaac sponsored a ride to Playland Park in Rye for a bus full of Yonkers kids age 13 to 18. In addition to free transportation to and from the park, all the kids enjoyed free admission and received a $15 food voucher for lunch and drinks inside the park, and snacks and drinks in the picnic area.
This was made possible thanks to donations from Yonkers Firefighters Local 628; the Yonkers Federation of Teachers; Yonkers Captains, Lieutenants and Sergeants Association; SEIU-Local 704; Spano Fuel; and ShopRite of Greenway Plaza.
