Congressman Lawler: Why Did It Take 41 Months for Border Security?

Congressman Mike Lawler released the following statement after President Biden finally took executive action to begin unwinding the border crisis he created after rolling back many of former President Trump’s executive actions on the border. President Biden’s executive actions come nearly 41 months after he took office, and over three years after he rolled back many of the Trump-era border security executive orders.

“While I’m glad that President Biden has finally woken up to the fact that we have a crisis at our Southern Border – over 3 years after he rolled back countless Trump-era border security protections – the fact is that it’s not nearly enough,” said Congressman Lawler (NY-17). “House Republicans passed H.R. 2 – the Secure the Border Act – over a year ago, which represented the most serious border security measure put forth in decades, but Senator Schumer ignored that bill in the Senate, instead opting for a bill that couldn’t even muster enough votes to pass, despite two tries.”

“It is my sincere hope that the Biden Administration will work with House Republicans and Senate Democrats to find a border security bill that can actually pass both chambers, secure our border, and fix our broken immigration system,” concluded Congressman Lawler (NY-17). “New York state cannot continue to provide billions in funding to fund healthcare, education, lodging, food, and more for those who crossed our border illegally – and the easiest way to stop it is for the White House, Senate, and House to find a fix.”

Congressman Lawler is one of the most bipartisan members of the 118th Congress and represents New York’s 17th Congressional District, which is just north of New York City and contains all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.
