This year, Yonkers Rising, with the help of reporter Phil Foley, has named a player of the year for the Yonkers Force and Yonkers Brave high school football teams. This year was the first year Yonkers Public Schools combined their high school football teams into two teams, and the result was a great success.
Yonkers Force linebacker and fullback Elijah Chambless was selected as the Force’s player of the year. Coach Dan DeMatteo said Chambless, who led the team in tackles on defense and in rushing yards on offense, was an all-section football player and MVP in his league.
Chambless stepped up for the big games, where he was named defensive MVP for the senior game, and was captain and MVP of the big game in Yonkers, the City Bowl, against the Brave.
He has drawn interest from Alfred University, SUNY Brockport, SUNY Cortland and Western Connecticut colleges. Chambless is a senior at YMA high school.
We will announce our Yonkers Brave player of the year next week, and next year we will expand our players of the year to include all YHS high school sports.
