Celebrate Black History Month at New Rochelle Public Library with Exciting Programs for All Ages

This February, the New Rochelle Public Library (NRPL) invites community members to honor Black History Month with a diverse lineup of programs celebrating the achievements, culture, and history of the African-American community. From engaging children’s activities and West African dance workshops to live jazz and virtual presentations, the library offers something for everyone.

“We take great pride in our role as a cultural hub where all members of our diverse community can connect, learn, and grow,” said Eugenia Schatoff, New Rochelle Public Library Director. “Black History Month provides an important opportunity to celebrate the immense contributions of African-Americans throughout history, and we are committed to offering programs that reflect our dedication to honoring these achievements.”

Spin a Soft African Story, Sing a Soft African Song, Wednesday, February 19, 2:00 PM

Children ages 4–12 are invited to enjoy African folktales and songs in this interactive and entertaining program led by International Storyteller/Singer Therese Folkes Plair. She will share stories from the African diaspora with tributes to award-winning authors of children’s literature: Nikki Giovanni, Ella Jenkins and Efua Sutherland.

Black History Month Storytime and Unity Bracelets, Wednesday, February 19, 4:00 PM

Celebrate Black History Month with a special storytime and art activity hosted by our friends at the New Rochelle Youth Bureau. Kids will hear inspiring stories centered around Black heritage and create “Unity” bracelets to wear and share. For ages 4–12. 

Virtual Presentation: Groundbreaking Black Comedians, Tuesday, February 11, 7:00 PM

Celebrate the trailblazing contributions of comedians like Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, and Flip Wilson, who transformed the world of comedy.

Bokandeye African Dance Performance, Saturday, February 22, 3:30 PM 

Immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of West Africa with Bokandeye Dance. This high-energy performance by participants in the Bokandeye African Dance workshop, features traditional rhythms, movements, and folklore from the Senegambia Region, presented through vibrant choreography and storytelling. Appropriate for all ages, this celebration of African heritage is a highlight of the month.

Virtual Presentation: Motown Records and Berry Gordy, Tuesday, February 25, 6:30 PM

Discover the legacy of Motown Records and its founder Berry Gordy in this compelling virtual program. Historian Rick Feingold will share fascinating stories and classic video footage of Motown’s early years.
