The Westchester-Putnam Council of Boy Scouts of America has teamed up with Westchester’s United for the Troops to make masks and scrub caps for local county day care workers, first responders, supermarkets and stores.
“We were approached by the National Boy Scouts of America Council along with other Councils in the area to give away neckerchiefs for the purpose of making masks and scrubs,” said Rich Stockton, Scout Executive/CEO for the Westchester-Putnam Council.
The project was coordinated by Daniel Conniff, Assistant Scout Executive /COO for the Westchester-Putnam Council. “Once we knew we were getting 8,640 neckerchiefs, we reached out to United for the Troops, who has outreach in the Westchester, Putnam and Rockland areas. They connected us to several organizations to distribute the neckerchiefs.”
Jimmy Rathschmidt, Co-founder of United for the Troops, said, “We delivered the donated neckerchiefs to several organizations in the area, including Croton Face Masks Makers and Mask America, so they could make the masks and scrub caps for us to deliver.”
Yorktown BSA Troop 165 Scoutmaster Jann Mirchandani has been making scrub caps from the donated neckerchiefs with her facebook group, Croton Face Masks Makers. “We wanted to help our local community who may be in short supply of masks and scrub caps,” she said.
The Westchester-Putnam Council of Boy Scouts of America is a non-profit organization with a proven program serving over 6,300 Westchester and Putnam county youth and 2,100 adult volunteers by providing leadership and character development. With 170 units spanning both counties, scouts engage in service projects that provide needed improvements to county and state parks, as well as town properties, libraries and food pantries. Scouts often partner with the business community to build a connection between the local business, government, and nonprofit sectors.
The Council provides over 45,000 service hours a year to the towns it serves and other nonprofit organizations through the program’s dedication to leading others by serving the community. Over 169 scouts have earned the rank of Eagle in 2019, a nationally recognized badge of leadership training. The Council was named Outstanding Non-profit by Westchester Magazine in the Fall of 2018.
United For The Troops was created by friends and families of our Troops serving the U.S. overseas.
