The Westchester County Board of Legislators celebrated Caribbean American Heritage Month on Monday night with a ceremony honoring two exceptional individuals: Horace E. Anderson, Jr., Dean of Pace University’s Elisabeth Haub School of Law and champion of expanding educational opportunities and Annmarie Smith, longtime Yonkers public education advocate and community leader.

Board Chairman Vedat Gashi (D- New Castle, Ossining, Somers, Yorktown), who convened the ceremony and welcomed guests, said, “We are proud to honor Dean Horace Anderson, Jr. and Annmarie Smith, two exemplary Caribbean Americans whose contributions to education and public service embody the values we celebrate during Caribbean American Heritage Month. Dean Anderson’s journey from first-generation American to pioneering legal educator, and Ms. Smith’s four decades of advocacy for Yonkers students, demonstrate the profound impact Caribbean Americans have made in Westchester County. Their dedication to mentorship and community advancement reflects the rich heritage we celebrate this month.”

Majority Leader Tyrae Woodson-Samuels (D- Mount Vernon) said, “It is a distinct honor to recognize Dean Horace Anderson, Jr. during Caribbean Heritage Month. As the first Black dean in the history of the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University, Dean Anderson has demonstrated exemplary leadership, elevating the Law School’s national standing and expanding its impact within our community. His commitment to fostering academic excellence, advancing diversity within the legal profession, and championing innovative programs in environmental law, social justice, and civic engagement has set a remarkable standard. We celebrate Dean Anderson as a distinguished leader and an outstanding representative of the Caribbean American community, whose contributions continue to enrich our institutions and inspire future generations.”

Legislator Shanae Williams (D- Yonkers) said, “During Caribbean American Heritage Month, we honor the rich cultural legacy and contributions of Caribbean Americans in Westchester County as a whole. Annmarie Smith embodies that spirit through her unwavering dedication to public service and education advocacy. Her tireless work on behalf of Yonkers families makes her a shining example of the power and impact one person can have. She helps strengthen communities and makes a difference in our city for many generations to come.”
