By Dan Murphy
From the Yonkers Police Department: On Thursday August 29th, at approx 3:45pm the Yonkers Police Department received a call of a dispute at a barber shop in the area of Central Park Avenue and Yonkers Avenue. Upon arrival officers located a male victim with multiple lacerations to his right arm. The victim related that while performing barber services a dispute ensued and the customer allegedly grabbed a pair of scissors and struck the victim multiple times in the arm and hand while making antisemitic statements before ultimately fleeing from the location. Responding officers immediately began canvassing the area for the suspect and located a suspect who was later positively identified by the victim. The victim was remanded to Westchester County Jail pending his next court date,” end of Yonkers Police Department statement
The babershop owner conducted a phone interview with the Journal News, something that crime victims ususally do not do.
In that story, the man, who remains unidentified, said that the man, identified in the story as Ahmed al Jabali, 34, was intoxicated, and while getting a haircut began screaming “I want to kill you, you (expletive) Jew” and then stabbing the barber.
According to the LoHud.com story, (lohud.com/story/news/local/westchester/yonkers/2024/09/03/jewish-barber-in-yonkers-ny-stabbed-in-what-police-called-a-hate-crime-ahmed-al-jabali/75059061007/?)
The barber said that Jabali threatened to blow up his store. The barber said that he suffered a large gash on his hand which will prevent him from continuing his business. Some have questioned the attempted murder charge given to Jabali, who, according to reports, has a record of five arrests in Yonkers, and an order of protection against him from his mother.
Jabaqli remains in custody at the Westcheter County Jail. The barber is a 51-year old man who lives in Queens. A sign outside of the barber shop says under new management.
Editor’s Note: Several residents in Yonkers told us that they know the barber , who has been in business at the Yonkers Ave. location for decades. They describe him as being loud and boisterous, frequently shouting derogatory comments at passers by. One resident told us that he stopped frequenting the barber shop because of his erratic behavoir. “I worried that something would happen, and sure enough it did.”
