Cuomo Put Politics over Putting People on USNS Comfort
The Cuomo COVID Orphans released the latest yet to be answered questions for reporters to ask former Governor Andrew Cuomo in this 9th installment of their weekly series, called ASK ANDREW.
During the pandemic, on April 2, 2020 President Trump approved the Javits Center to receive COVID patients, opening up 2,500 beds. On April 6, 2020, President Trump agreed to Cuomo’s request to allow the USNS Comfort to take COVID patients, opening up 1,000 additional beds.
On April 7, 2020 NYS DOH issued a five page admission criteria for the Javits Center and the USNS Comfort. On the same day, Mike Dumont, Vice Admiral of the US Navy, emailed Melissa DeRosa asking for help to get more patients into the Javits and the USNS Comfort, as they only had 83 and 37 at that time, respectively.
On September 30, 2020, Cuomo said the “mandated transfer from hospitals to nursing homes never happened…. so it just never happened that we needed a nursing home to take a Covid positive person. It never happened…”
On October 20, 2020, Cuomo denied that his March 25th directive caused any additional deaths. He argued that, “We had extra beds at Javits…. so it just never happened that we needed a nursing home to take a COVID-positive person… It never happened.”
March 29, 2023: Cuomo in a radio interview stated that by the time the USNS Comfort was approved to take COVID patients, on April 6, 2020, it was no longer needed.
When in fact, 7,000-plus COVID-positive patients were transferred from hospitals to nursing homes between April 6, 2020 and May 10, 2020.
