Last year, a new Veterans Day tradition in the Village of Ardsley began when local Girl Scouts learned about the military service of a group of 12 Ardsley veterans during their inaugural Veterans Walk of Honor.
Positive community feedback led to the program’s expansion planned for the 2nd Annual Ardsley Veterans Walk of Honor, from 2 to 3:30 PM, Sunday, November 9. The Walk will begin at the Ardsley Fire Department at 505 Ashford Avenue.
This year, the Girl Scouts will visit the Military Tribute Banners of 19 Ardsley veterans and will, like last year’s group of Girl Scouts, hear first- hand about the honorees from the spouses, children, grandchildren and friends who will pay tribute to their loved ones. The banners of the 19 honorees, displayed on the
village light poles, are within walking distance of each other along Ashford Avenue.
The honored veterans, many of whom are deceased, include 11 who served in World War II, 1 during the Korean War; 5 during the Vietnam War and 2 during the Cold War.
Highlights of the Walk will be comments by Elizabeth Dreaper, the only female veteran in the group who will share her experience in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1979-1983; Ardsley Mayor Nancy Kaboolian who will speak about her father Paul Kaboolian’s service as a quartermaster in the U.S. Navy during World War II Navy and Sharon Colabello, lead organizer of the Ardsley’s trailblazing Military Tribute Banners initiative, now in its fourth year, who will discuss how her father Martin Engleman’s World War II service with the U.S. Army inspired her. Ardsley now boasts 142 Military Tribute Banners which will be displayed throughout November as part of the village’s month-long observance of Veterans Day which includes the annual Girl Scouts Walk of Honor.
The following is the list of the veteran honorees:
