Spend an evening with Ray Tabano, founding member of the legendary rock band Aerosmith, on June 14 at the Homestyle Grill at Sprain Lake Golf Course, where a rock and roll barbeque and fundraiser for the Disabled American Veterans will take place.
“Currently there are approximately 4 million veterans with disabilities, so the need is great and growing,” said Tabano. “ I’ve been an ardent supporter of DAV for 25 years and this is an opportunity to express my gratitude to those who were hurt defending our freedom.”
Members of the DAV will be manning the door and on hand to accept donations. Admission to the event is $ 20, which includes the show and a free buffet. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. The show kicks off at 7 p.m., with Ray Tabano and the 3rd Street band. There will be other performers and guests – and you never know who may show up!
Tabano, a longtime Yonkers resident, grew up with Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler in the northeast section of Yonkers. They both attended Roosevelt High School and together formed a gang called the “Green Mountain Boys.” The gang itself did nothing “gang-like,” but would eventually morph into Tyler’s first band, The Strangeurs, which quickly gained popularity as a cover band and attracted a fan base in New York and around the New England area.
Later, Tabano and Tyler moved to Boston and founded Aerosmith – and the rest is history. While Tabano left the band, he continued to be a part of Aerosmith, working behind the scenes. He left the band in 1979 after a new management takeover, but Tabano and Tyler remain lifelong friends.
Tabano said the upcoming event “isn’t about me or about Aerosmith, it’s about having a good time and helping our disabled vets, and helping their transportation costs. So if a vet has to fly into New York for an operation, we can help pay for his transportation to the VA hospital,” he said. “It’s all about the vets and this year, we have a lot of local support and sponsors.”
