Letter to the Editor: Pigeons

Dear Editor,

America’s ‘Rock Dove’ (pigeons) choose living in crevices of urban buildings, since before being brought to America in 1600’s to be used
for “food & sport,” they lived in the crevices of Europe’s rocky cliffs.  And if not for discovering chickens, Americans would be eating
‘Kentucky Fried Pigeon’ today.

Due to their intelligence & homing nature, pigeons were also ‘used’ to transport messages during war times, etc. & today a few ‘suburban’ pigeon owners, esp. in New Jersey, keep small flocks (as pets) & belong to Pigeon Clubs.  Periodically, one member is chosen from the clubs to transport a collection of each club’s ‘best’ homing pigeons to a distant state, released there & the ones who fly hundreds of miles to get home the soonest, wins prize money.

No ‘pigeon diseases’ have ever been noted by the clubs. Since Henry Ford’s invention & telephones & billions of cattle exist today, ‘free roaming’ horses are getting the same shaft as pigeons.  Any animal species no longer “useful” to humanity, are being deprived of food & water + habitat.  And just like pigeons, have no way to speak for, or to ‘defend themselves.’

Just something to think about before denigrating & supporting controlling’ the lives of another free-born, non-human species, incl. the fact that without vastly diverse ‘wild’ life species, human life couldn’t exist.

Thank you, Marilyn Leybra, Pomona
