BURKE REHABILITATION EXPANDS SERVICES TO TREAT MORE PATIENTS WITH COMPLEX NEUROLOGICAL REHABILITATION NEEDS

Advancements will further cement Burke as a center of excellence for neurological rehabilitative medicine

Burke Rehabilitation®, a leading provider of advanced physical and medical rehabilitation and member of the Montefiore Health System, today announced a series of strategic advancements to enhance its nationally recognized neurological rehabilitation care. Together, these advancements will improve patient outcomes and quality of life, while allowing more individuals recovering from brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, and other complex neurological conditions to benefit from the specialized, evidence-based, and personalized rehabilitation care offered at Burke.

According to a 2025 study, more than half of the people in the United States—over 180 million individuals—live with at least one neurologic disease or disorder. To meet this increasing demand, Burke has made purposeful strides to expand its services and programs to treat more patients with complex neurological needs, including:

  • providing medical and rehabilitation care for individuals with severe acquired brain injury who demonstrate emerging signs of consciousness, known as Disorders of Consciousness (DoC), such as minimally conscious state (MCS) where definite but sometimes inconsistent signs of awareness are present due to severe acquired, degenerative, or developmental brain damage.
  • expanding physical and medical rehabilitation research and innovation efforts including a first-of-its-kind clinical research project examining obstructive sleep apnea among inpatient rehabilitation patients with acquired brain disorders, supported by $75,000 in grant funding.
  • opening a state-of-the-art, on-site CT scanner suite to diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries more quickly, supporting a more seamless care experience for patients whose conditions may require timely imaging, including those suspected of experiencing complications such as a second stroke or brain bleed.

“At Burke, our mission to provide the highest quality medical care and rehabilitation services drives us to lead through innovation,” said Scott Edelman, MBA, CPA, CFE, Executive Director of Burke Rehabilitation. “As a leading provider of advanced rehabilitation medicine, we are continually translating advances across the industry into post-acute care that delivers meaningful outcomes—helping patients regain function, restore independence, and return to the community.”

These programs will further enhance the robust neurological care delivered at Burke. In 2025, Burke neurorehabilitation inpatients had a lower self-reported 30-day readmission rate (4.98%) than the nation (7.20%), and mobility and self-care gains outpaced national averages. Burke also cares for the most stroke patients in New York.

“Achieving excellence in neurological rehabilitation requires a connected model that combines specialized clinical care, timely diagnostics, rigorous research, education and collaboration across disciplines,” said Dr. Erika Trovato, Associate Chief Medical Officer, Chief Quality Officer at Burke Rehabilitation. “We are making purposeful investments across Burke so that more patients with complex neurological conditions can receive the specialized, individualized care they need to achieve their personal care goals.”

Education, research, and innovation are also at the core of the neurorehabilitation strategy at Burke. Burke offers a one-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship for two Board Eligible/Board Certified physiatrists and/or neurologists committed to subspecialty training in Brain Injury Medicine, training future leaders in the field. Burke also participates in scientifically rigorous, clinically integrated studies targeting meaningful functional outcomes and real-world solutions for medically complex patients, including those recovering from neurological conditions.

Together, these efforts position Burke to continue building a comprehensive model of neurological rehabilitation excellence—one that brings expertise, innovation, and patient-centered care closer together and leverages the “whole person” approach that improves patient outcomes and quality of life following discharge back to community.
